For over fifty years, the Indiana Choral Directors Association has served as the primary advocate for choral music in the Hoosier state.  Organized as a state chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, ICDA provides resources and creates community for member choral conductors of all types throughout Indiana.  Among its major activities each year, ICDA hosts a three-day Summer Conference, sponsors the Indiana All-State Honor Choir at the IMEA Professional Development Conference and the All-State Jazz Choir at the ICDA Summer Conference, and publishes a newsletter titled Notations.  District Representatives serve as liaisons between the state-level organization and members in each ISSMA Zone.  Repertoire and Resource Chairs share expertise in diverse specialty areas through reading and interest sessions, articles, and maintaining ISSMA repertoire lists.

The ICDA board meets quarterly, and all are welcome to attend.  The board is comprised of the president, vice president, president-elect, treasurer, secretary, the all-state choir chair, the Notations editor, district representatives, repertoire & standards chairs, and any appointed committee chairs.

The founding of the Indiana Choral Directors Association as an organization is first mentioned in the ACDA publication then called The Choral Journal in its March-April 1968 issue, with a listing of ICDA as an affiliated organization under the leadership of President Robert E. Stoll of Bloomington and Treasurer Russell L. Otte of Fort Wayne.

An article in the same issue titled “Indiana ‘Statewide’ ACDA Now Under Way” indicates that the “first workshop meeting of the Indiana Division of the American Choral Directors Association took place at Bloomington, Indiana on Saturday, January 13, 1968, at the Indiana University School of Music.” Reading sessions were conducted by Wendell Kumlein, Clyde Holsinger, Darrell Church, and Allan Ross. Indiana University performing groups appearing were the Chamber Choir under the direction of Don Moses, the University Singers under the direction of Fiora Contino, and the Singing Hoosiers under the direction of Robert Stoll.

A short meeting was held with projects for the coming year being a Gregg Smith choral workshop at Indiana State University, a fall workshop reading session, and a clinic session at Indianapolis on the Sunday following the ISTA meeting in October.
